TADS/PNVS
TADS stands for Target
Acquisition and Designation
Sight. TADS is a system which allows the Apache
crew to See, follow and engage a target from a great distance and in bad weather
or poor visibility. The TADS System is located at the front of the Apache
Helicopter, it's attached to the nose of the Apache together with the PNVS (Pilot
Night and Vision Sensor)
This is actually a weird picture, I think it's from one of the
first proto types. The System on the left side looks the most like the system we use today. The system on the right obviously didnīt get the contract. And when
it's attached to the helicopter it will look like the picture shown below. The
PNVS at the top and the TADS Below it. PNVS is
the on the top round device, The TADS system is below. The TADS actually consists out of 2 seperate systems. A DAY SIDE and a NIGHT SIDE.
In the day side section all the regular cameraīs are installed, including all the laser equipment. In the night side the FLIR is installed.
The NIGHT SIDE is the one that looks like a big black mirror. The DAY SIDE is on the right side, the blue and yellow rounds. The three
systems are assembled to a rotation turret. This allows the system to turn in different
directions. The PNVS and the TADS/FLIR are separated on the turret, this means
that they can each turn in the opposite direction at the same time.
